    Description

    YAOURE Yohure African Ivory Coast Hornbill Bird Carved Mask. This mask type with a depiction of a hornbill is called lomane. The word derives from anoman, which means “bird” in the Baule language. The lomane dances around the body of the deceased, then bends over and touches it. The mask kills the worms that decompose the body, this act could be interpreted as a symbol of purification.
    This mask is in good age appropriate condition with minor cosmetic surface wear and there is a “hairline” crack located near the chin end of the mask. The crack does not transfer to the inside. See pics for further condition evaluation.
    Mask measures approximately 12 1/2” long x 6” wide x 4” deep.
