Description
Up for auction are a pair of charming mid-century ballet studies, painted and signed by noted artist Doris Szalay. They are oil paint on board and framed in what appear to be the original sturdy oak frames. They measure 12" x 10" framed. There is a fair amount of info on Szalay online. I found this on an art auction site, which was selling another one of her dance studies (apparently a favorite subject of hers.)For sale is a wonderful circa 1940s oil painting by the award-winning listed artist Doris Szalay. (19?? -2008). This painting features a gorgeously rendered depiction of a young girl standing and engaged in a pensive thought as she ties on a satin sash around her waist. She appears to be wearing dance or ballet clothing and shoes. Perhaps she is making little adjustments in a slight pause prior to heading out to perform. It is done in a very modernist style of the 1940s with gorgeous vibrant colorations. The artist titled this painting "PAUSE". It is oil on board and signed by the artist in the lower left. The title is on the reverse on a gallery label from Collectors of American Art Inc. it is dated 1949. According to the label it was awarded as a gift in New York City. Condition: Excellent. The white painted frame with some surface grime. An original artist address label remnant accompanies this painting. It measures: Frame - 18 1/4" x 14 1/4" Painting - 11 1/2" x 8 1/2" Doris R. Szalay was born in Richmond, VA and lived for a while in Intervale, NH where she operated an art gallery. She was an accomplished painter who won many awards, regional and national. Her work was included in museum exhibitions as well as in public and private collections. Mrs. Szalay was a life member of the New York Art Students League, having
studied there five years, and a member of the Artists Workshop of New Smyrna Beach.
