Description
FEATURED: A most unusual Ekoi Ejagham Cross River State African mask, carved from local wood and covered with thin leather, decorated, incised and with curved, curling horns attached. This mask, unlike many of the sterotypical African faces found in similar masks, is different in its shape- a very full, round face, with wide plump cheeks, unusual lips, a interesting nose and those great whirling horns and topknot make this eyecatching and very striking. Purchased from an African tribal mask and sculpture collector's estate, we were told this was from the Nigerian-Cross River State-Cameroon area of Africa, where the Ekoi-Ejagham people have made this style of mask/headpiece for many decades, and dates to early 20th century or earlier, it is believed. We could not find anything similar on-line anywhere. It is certainly a unique Folk Art sculptural item, and one that will certainly draw attention and add a great international style to your home's decor.Measures: 17 inches long, 15 inches wide, and 12.5 inches deep. Made of African wood, covered in skin and decorated with incisions and markings, curled, curved horns applied on sides. Some signs of possible old repairs noted, but these could also be part of the artisan craft process which occured when the individual was making this. A stunning African wall sculpture in its present state!
