Description
1983 United Kingdom Sterling Silver One Pound CoinIn 1983, the Royal Mint has struck a limited issue Piedfort Silver Proof One Pound coin. The reverse is the Royal Shield designed by Eric Sewell and the obverse is a portrait of Her majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Designed by Arnold Machin. Piedfort are coins which have been specially struck on thicker than normal planchets. As their name suggests they have close associations with France, where from the twelfth century they were apparently issued by the King as presentation pieces. In Britain the practice of striking Piedfort is later and less frequent, but medieval and Tudor examples are known.
